Janice Mowry

Janice (Jan) Mowry, age 78, of Richardson, Texas, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020. Jan was born on September 10, 1942 in Henderson, TX to Stanley and Georgeanna (Jana) Litton.  Along with her younger sister, Diane, she spent her early childhood in Henderson surrounded by extended family. When she was in fifth grade, her father’s job in the oil industry took the family to Shreveport, Louisiana where she finished high school.  After earning a degree in elementary education from Abilene Christian College, Jan moved to Ft. Worth to begin a career as a second grade teacher.  It was there that she met the love of her life, Darrell Mowry.  They were married in 1968.  Jan suspended her teaching career to raise her three children in Benbrook, Texas.  After the children were older, she again began teaching at Southwest Christian School until retirement.

Jan could find joy in the smallest things.  She loved big earrings, sparkly clothes, fudge, and baseball.  She loved scrapbooking, antiques, musical venues, and her family. “Christmas Central” was her nickname because she loved the holiday and was in charge of anything Christmas related. Jan enjoyed teaching school, but her real passion was found in teaching Bible class.  As members of West Berry Church of Christ, Darrell and Jan taught 4th and 5th grade Bible class for many years.  She spent countless hours finding creative ways to communicate the truth of God’s Word to the students that she loved.  Later, she and Darrell were members of Western Hills Church of Christ. After an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2015, she moved to Richardson, Texas to be near her children and grandchildren.

Jan is survived by her son, Chris Mowry and his wife Laura of Wylie, Texas, daughter Michelle Price and her husband Brett of Richardson, Texas; sister Diane Browne and husband Clete of Bedford, Texas; grandchildren: Luke, Colton, and Lanie Mowry and Braden, Carly, Mason, and Landon Price.  Jan was preceded in death by her husband Darrell Mowry, daughter Jennifer Walton, and parents Stanley and Jana Litton.

A graveside service will be held at Burleson Memorial Cemetery, 490 Memorial Plaza, Burleson, TX at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 21, 2020.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in her memory be made either to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity most meaningful to you.
