James Phillips Obituary

James Edward “Jim” Phillips, 83, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2022, at his home in Burleson, Texas, with his family by his side.

Born in Alamosa, Colorado, on July 10, 1939 to Marjorie and Clem Phillips, Jim graduated from Alamosa High School and soon after he and his brother, Bob, took over operations of Phillips Trucking, their father’s trucking business. While operating his trucking business, Jim married Judy Kaye Welcher on December 21, 1963, and they raised their two sons, James Donald and John Edward Phillips, in Alamosa. After many years serving their trucking business customers throughout the San Luis Valley, much of Colorado and New Mexico, Jim and Bob sold their trucking business and Jim began his career as a real estate broker with Century 21 and Hay-Brownlow real estate agencies. After 66 years of living and working in Alamosa, Jim retired from real estate and in 2006, moved to Abilene, Texas to be closer to his sons. While in Abilene, Jim loved going to church and watching all sporting events at Abilene Christian University (ACU) where both his sons attended college. Jim then moved to Burleson, Texas where his son, James Donald currently resides and made new friends and connections in the Burleson Church of Christ and his community.

Prior to his passing, Jim talked about what he hoped people would remember about him. With the clarity of a young man, Jim said he loved living in the San Luis Valley and cherished all the friends he made in his 66 years living in Alamosa. At only 17 years of age, he drove one of his dad’s diesel trucks over La Veta Pass with a full load of livestock. Jim often talked to his sons and grand kids about the countless trucking trips he made over various snowy passes and roads throughout Southern and Central Colorado and Northern New Mexico. He would also talk about the many days he spent in the Alamosa “Sale Barn” where he picked up the ability to auctioneer. Jim found joy and fulfillment serving others through real estate and eventually owned 10 rent homes throughout Alamosa. In 1999, Jim was the #1 Real Estate Commissions Agent in the Century 21 Southern District and the #2 overall Century 21 Real Estate Agent in all of Colorado. He was proud of the time he invested at the Alamosa and Monte Vista Churches of Christ, his 53 years of marriage to Judy and always reminded people he had “the best” daughter-in-laws and grand babies who he loved “very, very, very much”. Jim’s family will always remember him for his sincere love of all his family and friends, hard work-ethic, stories of growing up and living in Southern Colorado, enjoyment of horse racing, casinos and watching his favorite sports teams including any team on which his kids or grands kids played, the Denver Broncos, The University of Texas Longhorns, ACU Wildcats and Texas Rangers.

Jim is survived by his brother Robert Lee “Bob” and wife Susie Phillips of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, his son Jim Phillips and daughter-in-law Wendy and their children Morgan, James and Macy of Burleson, Texas, his son John and daughter-in-law Marci Phillips and their children Mac and Molly of Dallas, Texas, nephews Carl and Craig Phillips and Phillip Scheible, and nieces Bonnie Jo Phillips Mercek and Carrie Phillips McAlpine. He was preceded by his parents, Clem H. and Marjorie Lay Phillips, brother Carl Clem Phillips, sister Frances Gertrude Scheible and brother-in-law, J.H. Scheible.
