Jane Burchfield Bates

October 1, 1962 — February 1, 2026

Jane Burchfield Bates left her earthly home on Sunday, February 1, 2026. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Curtis Bates, and her son, Josh Battles. Jane was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Lauren Christine Bates Naddy. Jane leaves nine grandchildren, who will forever miss her loving ways: Carter, Clay, and Vivian Naddy; Max and Henry Romero; and Dylan, Electa, Bailey, and Caleb Battles. They were all so blessed to have a Grandma like Jane.

A native of Kosciusko, Mississippi, Jane was the daughter of the late Charles and Bettie Burchfield. She is also survived by her three sisters, Libby Hewitt, Amy Owen, and Sally Doty.

Jane worked for Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas for over 20 years, providing hands-on nursing care to highly medically fragile children. She accompanied ventilator-dependent babies home from the hospital, taught families how to manage their children’s complex medical needs, accompanied her patients to school, and even traveled to Disney World with wheelchair-bound and ventilator-dependent children. Her nursing career was truly a ministry to every family she touched.

In her later years, Jane worked in a pediatric psychiatric clinic, serving as the first line of communication for families navigating medications and appointments. She was recognized by Cook Hospital when, while on a call with a parent whose child was threatening self-harm, she simultaneously called emergency services and calmly guided the parent through the crisis situation.

For the past few years, Jane and Curtis were fortunate to have all of their grandchildren nearby, and spent their time attending band concerts, ball games, and school activities for all nine of them. Their “farm” in Cleburne, Texas, was the site of holiday gatherings, birthday celebrations, and happy afternoons in the swimming pool for all. She was a devoted mother to Josh and Lauren, and her influence is clearly reflected in their lives and legacy. During her courageous battle with ALS, Curtis served as her primary caregiver, and the entire family extends their love and gratitude to him.

Services will be held at Mountain Valley Funeral Home (3407 SW Wilshire Blvd, Joshua, TX 76058). Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11 and a memorial service honoring Jane’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12.
